Some people leave their mark through music. Others leave it through their perseverance, resilience, and dedication to continuous growth. Harley Flanagan has done both.
Most people know Harley Flanagan as the founder and frontman of Cro-Mags, one of the most influential bands in the history of New York hardcore. His music, energy, and life story have inspired generations of musicians and fans around the world. But beyond the stage and the hardcore scene, Harley has also dedicated himself to another demanding path: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Meeting Harley was a reminder of one of the most beautiful aspects of Jiu-Jitsu: the mats bring together people from completely different worlds. Musicians, athletes, professionals, and students all become equal once training begins.
Harley’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey reflects many of the same qualities that made him respected in the hardcore community: discipline, resilience, authenticity, and commitment. Through years of training and dedication, he earned his black belt under Renzo Gracie, one of the most respected figures in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Receiving a black belt is never simply about technical ability. It represents years of sacrifice, consistency, setbacks, victories, injuries, and countless hours spent on the mats. It also reflects the relationship between student and professor, a bond built on trust, respect, and shared experiences.
Being awarded a black belt by Renzo Gracie carries special significance. Renzo’s influence on modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is enormous, and his academy has produced generations of exceptional practitioners, competitors, and instructors. Harley’s promotion stands as a testament to his dedication to the art and his commitment to lifelong learning.
What makes Harley particularly inspiring is that he approaches Jiu-Jitsu with the same intensity and passion that he brought to hardcore music. Yet despite his accomplishments, he continues to embrace the mindset of a student.
There is a strong connection between hardcore and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Both communities value loyalty, discipline, honesty, and perseverance. Neither rewards shortcuts. Both demand commitment, humility, and the willingness to face challenges directly.
For me, meeting Harley was about much more than meeting a legendary musician. It was an opportunity to meet someone whose life reflects many of the values that Jiu-Jitsu teaches us every day: resilience, humility, loyalty, and continuous growth.
His journey proves that no matter where we come from, the mats have the power to transform us. They teach us patience, discipline, and the importance of continuing to learn.
Thank you, Harley, for the inspiration, the conversation, and for demonstrating that the warrior mindset exists both on the stage and on the mats.
Congratulations on your incredible journey from New York hardcore pioneer to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Renzo Gracie.
See you on the mats.
