Training Jiu-Jitsu with Matt Heafy: CLA Games, Sparring, Pig Pen & Trivium Live

Some days remind us why we train.

Yesterday was one of those days.

What started as a day centered around Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became an experience that perfectly blended learning, community, friendship, and music.

One of the highlights of the day was having the opportunity to share the mats with Matt Heafy. While many people know Matt as the frontman of Trivium, on the mats he is a passionate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who genuinely enjoys training, learning, and exchanging ideas with others.

The day was built around movement, exploration, and problem-solving. We spent hours working through CLA (Constraints-Led Approach) games, live sparring rounds, and sharing perspectives on Jiu-Jitsu. Rather than focusing on memorizing techniques, the training encouraged adaptation, decision-making, and discovering solutions through live interaction.

The CLA games created opportunities to explore positions and challenges in a dynamic environment. Every round became an opportunity to test ideas, make adjustments, and learn from the reactions of our training partners. It was a reminder that Jiu-Jitsu is not simply about collecting techniques, but about developing the ability to solve problems in real time.

As the day progressed, the sparring rounds allowed us to apply those lessons under resistance. What stood out most was the atmosphere on the mats. Everyone was there for the same reason: to learn, improve, and help each other grow.

Some of the most valuable moments happened between rounds. Conversations about training, concepts, competition, and different approaches to learning often provide as much value as the rolls themselves. The exchange of knowledge between practitioners from different backgrounds and experience levels created an environment where everyone could take something meaningful away from the experience.

That sense of community is one of the things I love most about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The mats bring together people from different countries, professions, and walks of life, yet we all share the same language of learning through movement and challenge.

After spending the day training, rolling, and exchanging ideas, the experience continued with Pig Pen passes and an incredible Trivium concert. Going from hours on the mats to watching one of the world’s most respected metal bands perform live was a unique way to end an already unforgettable day.

A huge thank you to Matt Heafy for bringing people together and creating opportunities like this. Thank you as well to Corey Beaulieu, Paolo Gregoletto, the rest of the band, and the entire Trivium crew for being welcoming and making the experience even more memorable.

What I will remember most is not just the training or the concert, but the people. The conversations, the shared passion for growth, the willingness to exchange knowledge, and the friendships built through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Days like this remind me that the greatest part of Jiu-Jitsu is not the techniques we learn, but the connections we create along the way.
