Who Is Daniel Strauss?
Daniel Strauss, widely known in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community as “The Raspberry Ape,” is one of the most respected and creative figures in modern grappling.
Known for his dynamic style, technical creativity, and unique philosophy toward Jiu-Jitsu, Strauss has built a strong international reputation through competition, teaching, seminars, and years of dedication to the art. Unlike athletes who focus only on winning medals, Daniel is recognized for bringing personality, freedom of movement, and deeper understanding into his approach to BJJ.
His teaching style combines technical precision with conceptual learning — helping students understand not only how techniques work, but why they work.
For martial artists, training with someone like Daniel Strauss means learning directly from years of experience on and off the mats.
Daniel Strauss’ Grappling Career & Competitive Experience

Over the years, Daniel Strauss has competed against high-level opponents across some of the world’s most respected grappling promotions, including ADCC, Polaris, EBI, and Quintet. His aggressive submission-focused style and creative movement made him one of the most recognizable figures in the UK no-gi grappling scene.
Among his most notable appearances were his Polaris matches against well-known names such as AJ Agazarm, Jake Shields, and Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii. His victory over Ishii at Polaris 8 especially highlighted his technical ability against larger and physically powerful opponents.
Beyond competition, Daniel Strauss also became respected for his unique philosophy toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, emphasizing creativity, movement, adaptability, and intelligent training methods rather than relying only on athleticism or memorization.
4 Days with The Raspberry Ape at Casa de Luta

For four incredible days, Casa de Luta had the privilege of hosting Daniel Strauss for training sessions, seminars, and shared experiences that went far beyond normal classes.
From the moment he arrived, the atmosphere inside the academy changed. Every session became an opportunity to learn not only techniques, but also mindset, movement, creativity, and the philosophy behind effective Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Throughout his stay, we spent countless hours:
Training together
Teaching together
Discussing Jiu-Jitsu concepts
Talking about life experiences
Sharing ideas about competition and fights
Eating together after training
The experience felt natural and authentic — less like a formal seminar and more like spending time with someone who truly lives the martial arts lifestyle every day.
Training Focus: ACL Games, Back Control & Top Position Dominance

During the four days at Casa de Luta, Daniel Strauss shared some of the concepts and systems that have made his grappling style so effective and recognizable within modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
A major focus of the training was Daniel’s ACL Games system — a creative and highly strategic approach to controlling transitions, attacking movement, and creating constant pressure during exchanges. Rather than relying purely on strength or speed, the system emphasized timing, sensitivity, and intelligent reactions based on the opponent’s movement.
Students also spent significant time working on:
Back control systems and transitions
Maintaining dominant top control positions
Submission chains from controlling positions
Pressure-based movement and positional control
Creating attacks without sacrificing balance or control
One of the most valuable aspects of the sessions was how Daniel connected every technique into a complete system instead of isolated moves. Each position flowed naturally into the next, helping students better understand how high-level grapplers build control before searching for submissions.
His teaching style constantly reinforced the importance of:
Control before submission
Efficiency over unnecessary movement
Staying relaxed under pressure
Understanding reactions instead of memorizing techniques
The back system sessions were especially insightful, with Daniel explaining details about maintaining control, anticipating defensive reactions, and applying submissions while conserving energy and maintaining positional dominance.
For many students, these concepts completely changed the way they think about modern no-gi grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu strategy.
More Than Just Training

What made these four days truly special was the connection built outside the academy as well.
Between sessions, we shared meals, conversations, stories, and experiences from both martial arts and everyday life. Discussions moved naturally from Jiu-Jitsu and competition into mindset, discipline, personal growth, injuries, teaching philosophies, and the realities of living as a professional martial artist.
Moments like these are what make seminars and visits memorable.
For many students, it was inspiring to see how approachable and genuine Daniel was despite his international recognition within the BJJ community.
The Atmosphere at Casa de Luta

The energy throughout the entire visit was incredible.
Students of different levels came together with one goal: to learn, improve, and experience high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu directly from one of the most creative minds in modern grappling.
Several participants mentioned similar thoughts after the sessions:
“The details he shared completely changed how I look at movement in Jiu-Jitsu.”
“What stood out most was how relaxed and natural his style feels.”
“You can tell he truly understands Jiu-Jitsu beyond techniques.”
The atmosphere on the mats remained focused, respectful, and highly motivated during all four days.
Key Lessons from the Experience
Training and spending time with Daniel Strauss left many important lessons for everyone involved:
Creativity matters – Jiu-Jitsu should adapt to the individual
Concepts beat memorization – Understanding positions is more important than copying moves
Relaxation improves performance – Tension limits movement and decision-making
Community is essential – Training together creates strong connections beyond sport
Consistency builds progress – Long-term improvement comes from intelligent daily practice
These lessons apply not only to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but also to life outside the academy.
