On August 31, 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting a Leg Locks Seminar at Boxclub Schaumberg e.V., bringing together athletes from different teams and experience levels for an intensive exploration of one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s most complex and misunderstood areas: leg locks.
The seminar, titled “A Beginner’s Guide to the Dark Arts,” was designed to demystify leg lock positions and create a clear, structured understanding of lower-body attacks—without shortcuts, gimmicks, or unnecessary risk.

Building Strong Foundations
Rather than focusing on isolated submissions, the seminar emphasized positional understanding first. We broke down:
- Proper leg entanglement concepts
- Positional hierarchy and control
- Safe mechanics for both attacking and defending
- Transitions between common leg lock positions
By understanding why positions work, participants were able to improve both their offensive confidence and defensive awareness.
Safety, Control, and Longevity
Leg locks often carry a reputation for being dangerous—but when approached correctly, they are no more risky than any other submission. A key focus of the seminar was training longevity:
- Controlled breaking mechanics
- Early recognition of danger zones
- Clear tapping and partner communication
- Defensive escapes that prioritize knee safety
This approach allowed everyone to train hard while staying safe.

Technique Meets Timing
Beyond mechanics, we explored timing and decision-making:
- When to enter leg lock exchanges
- When to disengage and pass
- How leg locks integrate into an overall Jiu-Jitsu game rather than replacing it
Participants learned how leg locks connect seamlessly with passing, sweeping, and back exposure—making them a strategic tool rather than a last resort.
Leg locks were presented as a tool within a complete Jiu-Jitsu system, not a shortcut or gamble.
“The biggest takeaway for me was understanding when NOT to go for the leg lock. That alone improved my overall game.”
— Pietro

Open Mat & Real-Time Application
The seminar concluded with an open mat session, where attendees could immediately apply the concepts under live conditions. This hands-on portion allowed for troubleshooting, personalized feedback, and real-time adjustments—turning theory into practical skill.
Key Takeaways from the Seminar
To wrap it all up, here are the main lessons participants took home:
- ✅ Leg locks are safest when built on strong positional control
- ✅ Understanding entries and exits is just as important as submissions
- ✅ Defense and awareness prevent injuries and improve confidence
- ✅ Leg locks integrate naturally into passing, sweeping, and back attacks
- ✅ A calm, systematic approach leads to long-term progress
