Teaching Leglocks: Insights from My Jiu-Jitsu Seminar at Pound For Pound Team Convention

I had the honor of teaching a Leglock Seminar at the Pound for Pound Convention, with nearly 80 Jiu-Jitsu practitioners on the mats learning modern No-Gi leglock systems. A proud moment for me and the AbelBJJ community.

A Moment I’ll Never Forget

There are moments in your career that stay with you forever — and for me, teaching at the Pound for Pound Convention was one of them.

Walking onto the mats that morning and seeing almost 80 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from different academies across Germany and Europe ready to train with me was a powerful sight. The mats were packed, the energy was high, and the atmosphere was pure respect and curiosity.

When I started showing the first sequence, I could feel how focused everyone was — drilling carefully, asking sharp questions, and absorbing every detail. That kind of energy gives you goosebumps.

Sharing My Passion for Jiu-Jitsu

There are few things more rewarding than teaching. This time, it was on a bigger scale than ever before.

At the Pound for Pound Convention, I had the privilege of leading a Leglock Seminar that brought together almost 80 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from all over Germany and Europe.

To see so many people on the mats — focused, curious, and motivated — was an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was electric, full of energy, respect, and love for the art.

Why I Love Teaching Leglocks

Over the years, I’ve developed a special passion for leglocks — not just as submissions, but as a complete system of control, strategy, and movement.

When taught correctly, leglocks teach you to:
✅ Control your opponent’s base
✅ Maintain balance and safety
✅ Create opportunities through precision, not power

My goal in every seminar is to make complex concepts simple and practical — so anyone, regardless of experience, can start applying them right away.

Inside the Seminar

During the session, we covered:

  • Entries into Ashi Garami
  • Finishing mechanics that prioritize safety and leverage
  • Transitions between inside and outside control
  • Leglock defense and counter-attacks
  • Maintaining base and posture while attacking

I wanted everyone to leave with not just techniques, but understanding — how each detail connects to the next. Watching 80 people drilling in sync, asking smart questions, and improving together was something special.

The Energy of the Pound for Pound Convention

The Pound for Pound Convention was more than just an event — it was a celebration of martial arts.
Instructors and athletes from different academies shared their knowledge openly. It was all about learning and connection, not ego or rivalry.

Being part of that environment and representing AbelBJJ and Casa de Luta Saarbrücken on such a big stage was both humbling and inspiring.

What I Wanted Students to Take Away

Every seminar I teach is built around four main principles:

1️⃣ Control before submission – Position is everything.
2️⃣ Structure beats strength – Smart angles always win.
3️⃣ Safety and understanding – Learn both sides: attack and defense.
4️⃣ Enjoy the process – The art evolves when you do.

By the end of the seminar, I saw everyone applying these ideas with confidence — and that’s what matters most to me.

A Memorable Moment

One of my favorite parts of the seminar came when a white belt — who admitted it was his first time ever trying leglocks — executed the sequence perfectly during the final drill. Everyone around him clapped, and he smiled like he’d just discovered magic.

That’s why I teach.
Moments like that remind me that Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone, and when we share knowledge, we lift the whole community.

What People Said

“Abel explained leglocks in a way I could finally understand. I used to be afraid of them — now I can’t wait to train them again.”
— Jonas M., Blue Belt

“The seminar was structured perfectly. I loved how Abel built each movement step by step. The vibe on the mats was amazing.”
— Lea R., Purple Belt

Hearing feedback like that makes me proud, not because of the praise, but because it shows that the teaching made a real impact.

Gratitude

I want to thank the Pound for Pound Convention organizers for putting together such a professional and inspiring event.
And a huge thank you to everyone who attended my seminar — your focus, energy, and questions made it unforgettable.

To my team at Casa de Luta Saarbrücken and everyone under AbelBJJ, I’m proud to share this journey with you. Your support means everything.

Looking Ahead

This seminar reminded me how much I love teaching and sharing Jiu-Jitsu.

I’ll continue traveling, teaching leglock systemsNo-Gi strategy, and competition preparation — and bringing back that knowledge to my students at Casa de Luta Saarbrücken.
