I attended the Oliver Taza No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu seminar at Matrix Kaiserslautern — a weekend of high-level technique, sparring, and mindset lessons that continue to shape my training at AbelBJJ and Casa de Luta Saarbrücken.
Who Is Oliver Taza?
If you follow modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the name Oliver Taza needs no introduction — but for anyone new to the sport, here’s why he’s one of the best in the game.
Born in Lebanon and raised in Canada, Oliver trained under the legendary John Danaher, the mastermind behind the famous Danaher Death Squad, alongside icons like Gordon Ryan and Garry Tonon. He’s a black belt, a multiple-time ADCC competitor, and a constant presence on top grappling stages like Who’s Number One (WNO), Grapplefest, and Polaris.
Taza is especially known for his technical mastery of leglocks, his methodical approach to No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, and his ability to make complex systems accessible to every practitioner. He’s not just a competitor — he’s a teacher who understands the science behind movement and control.
The Seminar at Matrix Kaiserslautern
On September 13–14, 2025, I joined my good friend Rene Becker at Matrix Kaiserslautern for a special weekend seminar with Oliver Taza.
The event drew grapplers from all over Germany — beginners, black belts, and competitors alike — united by one goal: to learn from one of the most technical minds in the sport.
The weekend was divided into two deep-dive sessions:
- Saturday: Leglocks
- Sunday: Pin Escapes
Taza’s attention to detail was incredible. Every movement had a purpose. He explained how to maintain control during transitions, when to apply pressure, and — most importantly — when to stay calm and wait for your moment.

What I Learned from Oliver Taza
1️⃣ The Subtle Science of Leglocks
Oliver’s approach to leglocks changed how I think about control. Instead of chasing submissions, he emphasized building structured control points — using hip connection, foot positioning, and weight distribution to isolate the leg without losing base.
That mindset is now part of how we train at Casa de Luta Saarbrücken and AbelBJJ: every attack should be controlled, balanced, and deliberate.
2️⃣ Smart Escapes Under Pressure
In the pin escape session, Oliver showed that good defense isn’t just about strength — it’s about understanding pressure. By creating small frames and moving your hips just a few inches, you can turn a bad position into a neutral one.
It was a powerful reminder that in Jiu-Jitsu, tiny adjustments make all the difference.
3️⃣ The Mental Side of Jiu-Jitsu
Oliver’s calm, analytical style stood out. He doesn’t rush; he studies the position and makes micro-decisions that add up to big results. That mindset — patient, composed, and confident — is something I try to bring into my own training and coaching.
Getting Rounds In After the Seminar
After both seminar sessions, we rolled — and those rounds were some of the best moments of the weekend.
It’s one thing to learn a concept; it’s another to test it live. Sparring with grapplers from different academies, including some very sharp competitors, was a great chance to apply what we’d just learned from Oliver.
Every round reminded me why I love this art: the respect, the challenge, and the constant opportunity to learn. It wasn’t about winning or losing — it was about connection and growth.
Rolling after a seminar also helps lock in the techniques. You feel the timing, you test your balance, and you realize how small details — the ones Oliver kept emphasizing — change the outcome of an exchange.
Those rounds left me inspired and grateful to be part of a community that values learning, hard work, and mutual respect.
Community and Collaboration
A huge thank you to Rene Becker and the Matrix Kaiserslautern team for hosting such a high-level event. The environment was friendly, open, and focused — exactly what BJJ should be.
These kinds of seminars don’t just improve your technique — they build bridges between academies. When schools like Matrix and Casa de Luta Saarbrücken collaborate, the entire German BJJ community gets stronger.
Bringing It All Back to AbelBJJ and Casa de Luta Saarbrücken
Back home at Casa de Luta Saarbrücken, I’ve already started implementing key concepts from the seminar into our training at AbelBJJ:
- Advanced leg entanglement control drills
- Smarter pin escape strategies
- Emphasis on calm, structured movement over chaos
- Rolling sessions focused on flow, timing, and precision
At AbelBJJ, our goal is to blend high-level technical knowledge with real-world training experience. What I learned from Oliver Taza reaffirmed that philosophy — train smart, stay curious, and never stop evolving.
Why This Matters for You
Whether you’re a beginner, a hobbyist, or a competitor, learning from top-level instructors like Oliver Taza shows us how deep Jiu-Jitsu truly is. It’s not just about submissions — it’s about control, patience, and problem-solving.
That’s exactly what we aim to teach at AbelBJJ and Casa de Luta Saarbrücken: a balance between technique, mindset, and community.
